Obudu Mountain Ranch: What Cross River State Has Published
7 min read

This page was commissioned as an expedition guide to Obudu Mountain Ranch. It is not one. An expedition guide needs trail lengths, walking times, elevation gains and difficulty grades, and neither the Cross River State Government nor the Nigeria National Park Service publishes any of those for this site. What both bodies do publish is more useful to anyone actually thinking of going: who controls the place, what is being rebuilt, and why you should not assume it is open. That is what follows.

What can we help you with?

Step 1 of 2

Three short questions, then just how to reach you. No account needed.

What is your question about? (required)
What's your situation? (required)
When do you want to arrange this? (required)

Why there is no trail list here

Numbers for this destination circulate freely. Drive times, distances to the nearest city, suspension bridge counts, hours on the mountain, grades for beginners and for the experienced: none of it traces back to the state government, to the concessionaire or to the federal park authority. A walking time that nobody published is not a small inaccuracy on a mountain. So the figures are absent from this page by decision, not by oversight, and the rest of it tells you what the published record holds instead.

Where the site is, and what it is not

The resort lies in Obanliku Local Government Area, Cross River State, in south-eastern Nigeria. It appears in official releases under three different names, which matters if you are searching: the Obudu Ranch Resort, the Obudu Cattle Ranch Resort and the Obudu Mountain Resort are the same place. Facilities named alongside it in the same state releases are the Utanga Safari Lodge, the Bebi Airstrip, a waterpark and a cable car. No distance and no travel time is given here, because the state publishes none.

It is also not Cross River National Park. The two are in the same state and are routinely confused, but they are different sites under different authorities, and that distinction decides who you ask for permission to walk anywhere.

The concession record: one revoked, one signed

The state's own news portal carries a dated chain, and it is the heart of this page. On 5 March 2025, Governor Bassey Otu revoked the concession agreement granted to CIBA Construction Company Limited, citing the company's failure to fulfill its contractual obligations, and terminated it with immediate effect. Six days later, on 11 March 2025, the state took the resort over. Sunday Micheal, Special Adviser to the Governor on Obudu Ranch Resort, described what the state found: It's a pity that this prime tourism asset witnessed unprecedented deterioration. He spoke of the eroded glory of the prime tourism asset, and the state's account attributed the damage to decay, neglect and vandalization. It put the cost at billions of naira without naming a figure, so no figure is named here.

Then, on 23 July 2026, the state signed a 25-year concession with Living Curation Real Estate Limited covering the ranch resort, the Utanga Safari Lodge and the Bebi Airstrip, with the rehabilitated facilities reverting to the Cross River State Government at the end of the term.

What the rehabilitation is supposed to cover

At a stakeholders' engagement reported on 8 August 2026, Deputy Governor Peter Odey, speaking for the governor, set out the scope of the works: rehabilitation of the cable car, upgrades to the accommodation and hospitality facilities, improvements to internal infrastructure and recreational amenities, rehabilitation of the Bebi Airstrip, and redevelopment of the Utanga Safari Lodge into a conservation site for flora and fauna. Living Curation's team lead, Amit Ghosh, said the company planned to rehabilitate the Ranch and Village public health centers within three months. Odey stated that the agreement does not constitute the sale of the Obudu Ranch Resort, Bebi Airstrip or Utanga Safari Lodge, which remain state property.

Read that list for what it tells you about conditions today. A cable car on a rehabilitation schedule is a cable car that is not carrying passengers. Accommodation on an upgrade schedule is not accommodation anyone can honestly describe to you as comfortable and ready for guests. That is why this page carries no room description.

Whether you can visit right now

This is the part a guide owes you and usually skips. Press reporting dated 29 August 2026 says the state intended to close the whole complex temporarily from 1 September 2026 so that the rehabilitation could begin, naming the resort, the waterpark, the Safari Lodge and the Bebi Airstrip. That is reporting of a stated intention, not a notice on the state's own channel. When the Cross River State Government's news portal was searched on 25 October 2026, it carried no closure notice and no reopening date. Nearly two months past the stated closure date, no reopening date has been published by the state or the concessionaire.

The practical reading: treat the site as closed, and get written confirmation from the state tourism bureau or the concessionaire before you commit to travel or spend anything. Flying in is not an option you can currently book either. A test flight was run at the Bebi Airstrip in August 2026, and commercial flight operations had not resumed as of that reporting.

Cross River National Park, which is a different place

If what you want is forest walking in this part of Nigeria, the body to approach is the Nigeria National Park Service, and the site is Cross River National Park. The Service publishes its own description: the park sits in the extreme south-eastern corner of Nigeria and covers about 4,000 square kilometers of mainly primary moist tropical rainforest, in two non-contiguous divisions. Oban is the larger at roughly 3,000 square kilometers, with about 1,568 plant species recorded, 77 of them endemic to Nigeria, alongside 75 mammals, 382 birds and 42 snake species. Okwangwo covers roughly 1,000 square kilometers and about 1,545 documented plant species in 98 families. The Cross River gorilla, Gorilla gorilla diehli, is endemic to the Okwangwo area, as is the bare-headed rock fowl, Picathartes oreas.

The Service was established by Decree 36 of 1991, with Cross River among the first five national parks, and it is a federal authority rather than a state one. Access, fees, guides and permission inside the park are therefore the Service's to grant. A resort cannot sell you entry to a national park, and a state release about a resort says nothing about park access.

The Cameroon border, and your own government's advice

The park's published description places it against an international boundary. The Service writes that the Oban division is ecologically contiguous with Korup National Park in the Republic of Cameroon separated only by the international boundary between Nigeria and Cameroon, and that the Okwangwo division borders Takamanda National Park on the Cameroonian side. This page gives no route, no crossing point and no practical help for entering that border area, and it makes no claim about conditions there.

For whether to travel to this part of Cross River State at all, read the travel advice issued by your own government for Nigeria, and read it on the day you book rather than once a year. That judgement belongs to your own foreign ministry, which revises it on information no destination page has, and it is not a judgement this page will make for you in either direction.

What is not published, and who to ask

Nobody publishes a trail inventory, walking times, distances or difficulty grades for the ranch or, in the material read here, for the park. There is no published entry fee, no room rate and no set of opening hours, which is what you would expect of a site in the middle of a rehabilitation concession with no tariff of its own yet. There is no reopening date. There is no temperature or rainfall figure specific to the plateau; the Nigerian Meteorological Agency forecasts by Local Government Area, so Obanliku is covered in its Seasonal Climate Prediction and not in a page like this one.

Three places to ask, in order. Your own government's travel advice, first and before anything else. The Cross River State Government's news portal and its tourism bureau, for the status of the resort and any reopening notice. The Nigeria National Park Service, for permission, fees and guides in Cross River National Park. All statements on this page were read from those bodies' own pages on 25 October 2026, and each is dated above so you can see how old it is when you get there.
